September 2009 Program

Back-to-Basics Part I: Write Smart. Write Well.
7:30 a.m., Friday, September 11 Herak Club at McCarthey Athletic Center, 801 N. Cincinnati St.
Whether you are sending out a quick email, making a professional presentation or updating your Facebook page, it pays to pay attention to what you write and how you write it. In today's fast-paced social media age, where personal and professional profiles often merge, it's more important than ever to develop good self-editing skills. At the first MarCom membership meeting of the year, Cheryl-Anne Millsap will speak on creating and maintaining a professional, yet engaging and charismatic personal writing style.
Cheryl-Anne Millsap is a freelance writer and writing coach who lives in Spokane. As the former editor of Spokane Metro Magazine, she helped develop the upscale city magazine. Millsap is the former "Home and Garden" editor for the Spokesman-Review. While at the paper, she wrote a popular personal column, "Home Planet" as well as a column on antiques and collectibles and was the Spokesman-Review's social columnist and writer. Her essays air on Spokane Public Radio each week and can be heard on public radio stations across the country. She is the author of "Home Planet: A life in Four Seasons," a compilation of favorite Spokesman-Review columns.
It’s easy to RSVP online! Please let us know if you will be attending by Friday, September 4th so we can assure we have enough seats and food for everyone.

Barbeques and fresh salads. Boating, fishing and hiking. Swimming at the lake. While I live for summers in Spokane, I also look forward to fall. It provides me with a return to normalcy, allowing routines to pick up where they left off in the spring. Not to mention that kids go back to school, football season kicks off and professional groups like MarCom start up again!
This year, we have many exciting plans in store for MarCom. The board met this summer and realized we were long overdue in joining several social networks. Now you can follow us on Twitter (http://twitter.com/SpoMarCom) and Facebook with Launchpad INW in the works. Add us as your friend!
We’ll also be changing our monthly meeting location to Gonzaga’s McCarthy Athletic Center. Parking is ample and free and we’ll continue to have a great breakfast assortment. To view a campus map, go to http://www.gonzaga.edu/About/campus-map.asp
This year we are also offering businesses the opportunity to sponsor a breakfast. For the low cost of $100, you can promote your business, event or service in front of 50-70 communication professionals at a monthly breakfast meeting. You’ll also receive:
-A blurb in the MarCom newsletter
-Banner at the event
-Opportunity to leave goodies at the breakfast tables or have a booth/exhibit at the breakfast
-PSA at MarCom breakfast
The money raised from the breakfast sponsorships will support our internship program. This year, our goal is to raise $6,000 for three local students. Help us reach our goal! To reserve your spot to sponsor a breakfast, contact Dean Davis, Fundraising chair, at dean@deandavis.com.
Finally – don’t forget to renew your membership. Our renewal rates are some of the lowest in town and we are the local marketing and communication networking group. You can renew your membership by sending this form into MarCom.
We’re kicking off the year with a refreshed board, excellent programming and ambitious goals we are determined to achieve! I hope to see you all at the September meeting.
