April 2009 Program
"Getting Green for Going Green"

7:30 a.m., Friday, April 3
Spokane Club, 1002 W. Riverside

Bill Bloom, Sustainability Consultant for Community-Minded Enterprises, will speak about "Green Marketing" during the April 3 PRSA breakfast meeting. The emphasis of the presentation is "Getting Green for Going Green." He will focus on the PR benefits a company can gain from implementing green practices. For example, the Spokane Indians are one of the most "green" businesses in Spokane. He will highlight some of the specific strategies they use to get the word to their stakeholders about their sustainability efforts.

Please join PRSA and MarCom at the Spokane Club on April 3 at 7:30 a.m.

A promise made must be kept

This year your MarCom Board of Directors unanimously agreed to increase the MarCom Internship Scholarship to $2,500. This increase demonstrates a commitment by the Board to reward the best and the brightest by matching them up with local MarCom Member organizations in a synergistic "win-win" situation. And while no one anticipated the tough economic times we now face, a promise made must be kept.

Indeed that financial commitment helped attract an even wider and more talented field of students than ever before, raising the level of competition as well as the "value" to the student winners.  Thanks to all of you within your organizations who applied to host an intern, and thanks to the students who applied as well.

A special thanks, however, goes to John Carter and Internship Committee members Alyssa Ando, Lisa Jacot, Breanne O'Doherty and Kristen Paul, who diligently assessed both sets of applicants and then narrowed them down to the winners.  (See the article in this newsletter announcing the student and host winners!) To anyone with a cynical view of the future, all I can simply say is PHOOEY! The winning students and all of those that applied are energetic, smart, capable, disciplined and ready to add value now and in the years to come.

So mark your calendars and plan on attending the Spark Awards, where you can meet the 2009 MarCom student interns and hosts. That should really make it a night to remember!

Student Interns & Hosts Announced

Two Local University Students Win MarCom Internship Awards

The MarCom Internship Committee has selected two deserving college students to receive internships with Spokane MarCom member organizations.  Kelly MacDonald, a senior majoring in Communications / Business at Whitworth University; and Tyler Tullis, a junior majoring in Public Relations / Advertising at Gonzaga University, were selected as this year's MarCom internship award winners.

Chosen by a panel of local marketing communications and public relations professionals, the interns were evaluated on a number of application requirements, including portfolio examples, news-release writing skills, and interview performance.

"I commend the work of John Carter and his committee in tackling the difficult task of selecting the two scholarship finalists. They took their responsibilities seriously and the results are outstanding both for the host firms and for the interns themselves," said MarCom President, Jeff Thomas.

Both winners will be paired with MarCom association communications professionals who are employed at local businesses and organizations. Those two host organizations, the YMCA of the Inland Northwest and Community Frameworks, were chosen through a competitive application and ranking process conducted earlier this year by the MarCom panel.

In addition to their 10-week internship positions, the two winners will each receive a $2,500 stipend.

"This year we had an increase in the number of students applying for the MarCom scholarships as well as an increase in the number of host firm applicants," Thomas said.  "The increased stipend to $2,500 is an affirmation of our faith in the future of today's rising marketing, communications and public relations graduates."

MarCom finances the annual program through its annual “Spark Awards” competition and other fund-raising activities. The internships are open to area undergraduate college students majoring in marketing communications, public relations or related fields. These annual internships are just one way that MarCom members give back to their community and help develop the next generation of our area’s marketing communications professionals.
