June 2008 Program
2008 Dussault Award Winning Entry Overview: "Light up the Fox"

Inside the Fox Theater Campaign
At the Friday, June 6
MarCom/PRSA Breakfast Meeting

If you’ve been anywhere in Spokane over the past few years, chances are you saw the very public campaign to re-open the community’s beloved Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox.  Now, take an insider’s view – a peak at the collaboration that produced this year’s Dussault Award-winning campaign “Light Up the Fox.”

Join us at the final breakfast meeting of the spring as Annie Matlow and Elizabeth Thompson of the Fox Theater and Mary Joan Hahn of Rockey Hill & Knowlton share the stage for June’s MarCom/PRSA breakfast on Friday, June 6 at 7:30 a.m. in Gonzaga's Cataldo Hall.

Remember to RSVP for the meeting, saving yourself several dollars and giving us a better idea of how many members and friends to prepare for.  You can RSVP easily, and pay online, at the Meeting Reservations page.

Mission Accomplished

Thanks to the MarCom board of directors and an engaged, energetic membership, we’ve once again had an outstanding year. At the beginning of the year, the board adopted four goals for the year. Here’s how we faired with them:

  1. Excellent programs: All of our programs were locked in before the very first meeting of the year. More important, the presenters received high marks from our members (average “4” rating on the survey).
  2. Walk the brand talk: Our brand promise involves broadening our membership, providing great educational opportunities and demonstrating the impact of our profession on the community. Well, we grew our membership (including several new members), increased our Spark Award attendance by more than 40, provided a wide array of educational programming (from social media to internal communications) and recognized a one-of-a-kind effort to revive a cultural landmark (The Fox) with our renewed Dussault Award. Local newsletters (How’s Business, Greater Spokane Incorporated) and media (KXLY TV and The Spokesman-Review) helped to share our impact through coverage of the Spark Awards.
  3. Improve technology with successful website rollout: In September, the new website had an instant impact on efficiently planning for meetings and faster renewal of members. Starting next year, more features will go live including a professional development message board, more photos and “refer a friend.”
  4. Fiscal responsibility: In past years, our breakfast costs outpaced breakfast fees. While final numbers are not yet in, online RSVP and a close relationship with Gonzaga/Sodexho will likely mitigate this cost discrepancy. In addition, thanks to the genius of our board and your generosity, the Spark Awards made a nice $1,800 profit that supports our internship program.

Next year promises to maintain this momentum. At the conclusion of the June meeting, you will have the opportunity to vote in two new board members and a president-elect that is sure to help us once again raise the MarCom bar.

Relive the Gala

The MarCom Spark Awards event packed the Spokane Club and sent plenty of marketing professionals home with well-deserved hardware.  Now you can see photos from that entertaining evening taken by Dean Davis by connecting to the photo gallery on his website at Spark Award Photos.

Follow Up to May's Speaker

Speaking of Dean Davis, he shared some tips at the May MarCom/PRSA breakfast about assignment photography that are available for you to see at the May 2008 Meeting page.  There also is a PDF on that page about intellectual property law from the legal perspective.  Both resources help fill out the information that Dean described in his impromptu presentation.
