Serendipity PR

Join us on Friday, November 3 at 7:30 a.m. At Gonzaga University's Cataldo Hall to learn how Bing Crosby finally got a theater named after him in his hometown.
The Metropolitan Performing Arts Center will be officially renamed The Bing Crosby Theater and dedicated on December 8 with a gala celebration highlighted by Bing's widow Kathryn Crosby performing her nationally acclaimed cabaret act. EWU Professors Steve Blewett and Bill Stimson and others involved in the project will describe how an innocent newspaper column turned into a crash PR program to take advantage of a unique opportunity and help preserve and enhance two great cultural legacies for Spokane--the name of Bing Crosby and the old Clemmer Theater.
More about our speakers:
Professor Steve Blewett, ABC, has been at Eastern Washington University in the Journalism Program full-time since 1988 after spending 15 years with the Washington Water Power (now Avista Corp) in a variety of PR capacities, and 4 years at the Spokesman-Review as a writer and editor. A 1969 and 1981 graduate of Eastern, Blewett is a member of the PRSA Spokane Chapter board, was a founding member of Spokane's IABC chapter, served on the board of the Spokane Advertising Federation and has been published in numerous national, regional and local publications. He is a winner of IABC's prestigious Gold Quill among numerous other awards.
Professor Bill Stimson, PhD, EWU Journalism Program Director, is also an EWU graduate and received his doctorate in history from WSU in 1999. He writes regularly about Spokane history, and has an extensive media background, including stints as a reporter for the Spokane Chronicle, stringer both for UPI and Reuters Wire Services and as editor of Spokane Magazine and Universe magazine for WSU. As a member of the board of The Friends of the Davenport Stimson played a key role in community efforts that led to Walt Worthy's acquisition of the hotel and its subsequent restoration. Stimson has published extensively in local, regional and national publications.

Is Generation-e Coming to Your Web Site?
I don’t know about you…but October’s program about blogging got me fired up! I would love to start a blog - just as soon as I come up with something interesting to say. For now, this will have to do!
The world of technology is so exciting and I’m addicted. I check out any new online innovation I can find and I am absolutely hooked!
I have a profile on MySpace.com and LinkedIn.com (which is the professional’s version of MySpace) so I can stay in touch with all my old friends and colleagues.
I use NewsGator.com as my RSS (Real Simple Syndication) aggregator so I have a constant stream of news – including the latest from CNN.com, the New York Times, local news outlets, People.com and E! Online, to name a few. And because my RSS aggregator is web-based, I can access it from any computer.
I frequently check out the podcasts (streaming audio clips) and vidcasts (streaming video clips) on my competitors’ web sites and on other sites I love to visit. There are podcasts for every interest. From parenting to wine to sports to politics – anything you want to know about – there is a podcast online to fit your needs.
The reality is that I am not alone. It has been estimated by Global Reach research agency that nearly 730 million people are using the Internet worldwide. ComScore Networks is predicting that in 2007, 77% of the online population over age 13 will shop online.
“Generation-e” is the term that is being used to describe Gen-Xers and Gen-Y/Millennials who have grown up with computers and the Internet in their home. Generation-e has an enormous amount of buying power – over $1 trillion annually – which is why it is so important to the success of an organization to have a strong presence online.
Even if you don’t have a product you can sell via the web, you can provide consumers with the opportunity to donate online to your non-profit or you can use the web to promote your service in a unique and entertaining way.
So, what are you doing to ensure that your organization is drawing the attention of those millions of online consumers? I challenge you to take a look at your 2007 marketing plan and see if there isn’t more you could do to bring visitors to your organization’s web site. And then make sure there is something worth their visit – a blog, podcast, vidcast, or even just well written text, engaging photos, and links to valuable information.
Enjoy breakfast on November 3rd and have a nice November!
