Who Needs Reality TV, When You Can Come to SPRC?

WELCOME BACK!  It is hard to believe fall is here and we’re gearing up for another sensational season of SPRC programming. That’s right—our fall line-up clearly overtakes CBS, FOX, NBC and ABC. Your SPRC Board of Directors has been working hard throughout the summer months to ensure we provide you with high quality programs, well-organized meetings, exceptional workshops and caffeine filled networking opportunities. Maybe you have seen Southwest Airline’s television program, Airline on A&E. This month, Program Chair, Bethany Luck-Hutson has been working to bring some of these crazy customer situations to you. Sharpen your customer relationship skills by attending September’s program, “The Customer Is Not Always Right.”

Next month you will have a chance to tell us how SPRC is doing by filling out our member survey. Please take the time to provide your input as it will play a vital role in the development of SPRC’s 5-year strategic plan being spearheaded by Fundraising Chair, Nicole Grier.

To stay competitive with your favorite television programs, we too need ratings. SPRC member feedback is critical to our organization and in an effort to make it easier, you will notice the conspicuous absence of paper program evaluations—that’s right, we’ve gone paperless! Instead, members will now receive a survey via e-mail after each meeting. Please take a minute or two and provide your feedback and input.

If you have ever thought you might be cut out for reality TV, an SPRC committee is definitely for you. Internship Chair Kaarin Appel, SPARC Event Chair Yvonne Lopez-Morton and SPARC Judging Chair Dave Sonntag are going to be casting shortly. Each is looking for dynamic individuals with bubbling personalities and a PR/Marketing background. If you’re still hesitating about applying, Special Events Chair Jeff Oswalt can help develop your application video.

I look forward to seeing you on September 9th. Just remember we don’t have TiVo capabilities yet, so members still have to attend meetings to participate in the SPRC reality programming!

P.S. Don’t forget to tell your friends. Membership Chair, Sara Johnston is recruiting the live television audience for Friday meetings. I wouldn’t want them to miss out.

The Value of Internships

"Leadership & learning are indispensable to each other."

--John F. Kennedy

Do you remember your college internship and how it helped you hone in on your career? Or more importantly, helped you realize areas you may not be interested in pursuing. Maybe you’ve always regretted not doing an internship or perhaps are one of the fortunate SPRC members who has benefited from having an SPRC intern.

Which ever category fits you, you understand the value of internships and why it is important get involved with the SPRC Internship Program. The continued success of this program is a reflection of the commitment and ongoing leadership from SPRC members and inquisitive college students who are eager to embark on fantastic learning opportunities. In essence, both entities are indispensable; one side can not work without the other.

Each year SPRC awards internships with member organizations to at least two students. Both 10-week internships include a $1,500 stipend and tremendous opportunity for students. A team of four to five SPRC members is responsible for publicizing the program, distributing applications, visiting classrooms and interviewing and selecting both interns and hosts.

This is your chance to experience the reward of helping select two deserving students for the this year’s SPRC Internship as well as getting to know some of your SPRC colleagues a little better. The Internship Committee does not require a significant time commitment! It meets once a month from October through March, markets the program to area institutions and determines which interns and host companies are selected.

To provide leadership, expertise and enthusiasm on the Internship Committee or for more information, please contact Kaarin Appel at 358-7528 or via e-mail at kappel@wsu.edu.
