Media Convergence: Implications for Public Relations Professionals

A moderated panel discussion with local media representatives

Seasoned media professionals will discuss the trend toward convergence and the implications for public relations practitioners at the Friday, April 1, SPRC/PRSA breakfast meeting. They will also offer tips and techniques for working with print and broadcast newsrooms. Steve Blewett, ABC, Associate Professor and Journalism Director, Eastern Washington University, will facilitate a moderated discussion with:

·        Susanna Baylon, KXLY-4 and News 920 AM

·        Jeff Hite, KHQ-6

·        Ken Sands, The Spokesman-Review

Each panelist will describe their news organization in terms of audience, operations and their role in covering the news. They’ll reflect on media convergence and the impacts of technology, 24-hour news cycles, blogging and audience fragmentation. You’ll hear about the pressures facing newsrooms today and learn more about how you, as a public relations professional, can turn the challenges of media convergence into opportunities for success.

About the Panelists

Susanna is an Emmy award winning broadcast journalist and an adjunct professor for Whitworth College’s Communications Studies department.

An experienced photographer, Jeff Hite is executive producer for KHQ-6, where he oversees the team of news photographers and operations. The Definition of a Working Board

By Sara Johnston, SPRC president

The SPRC board is truly a reflection of our membership – diverse in backgrounds, ages, industries and areas of interest. Each member of the board brings unique talents which they so generously contribute for a common purpose as we continue to grow as an organization. In an effort to thank the board, I wanted to step back for just a moment and talk a bit about the dedication, commitment and talents that each person brings. There are currently 10 members on the board and several people are nearing the completion of their terms. So much of the board work takes place behind the scenes; I thought I’d highlight some of the key contributions of each board member. Each member heads up a specific area and, in some cases, builds a committee:

·          Janelle Jovick-Leonard is the tireless Program Chair and President Elect. She listens to the membership about current areas of interest for future presentations, collaborates with PRSA to develop and organize monthly programs. Janelle is a pro at handling all of the details – but also has the know-how to step back and think about the big picture.

·          Greg Orwig, our Past President and Membership Chair has invested so much time and energy into building the organization to what it is today. Since he’s been involved with SPRC, Greg has had a hand in everything from SPARC awards to policy development.

·          Robyn Dunlap, who is wrapping up her term, currently serves as the Newsletter Chair.  She writes, edits and distributes the newsletter each month.  Robyn has also been an incredible part of building the internship program to what it is today – an organized, efficient program that helps up to three students per year.

·          Madonna Luers, also getting close to completing her term, is the Internship Chair.  She built the internship committee for this year and has invested significant time and energy into finding the most qualified interns and matching them up with host companies. In past years, Madonna also handled SPARC award judging.

·          Josh Falconer is currently our Treasurer. His attention to detail, great ideas and commitment to the organization have made a real difference this year –not only in financial planning for the future but also with membership, programs and SPARC award planning.

·          Bethany Luck-Hutson is our SPARC Chair this year and brings so many incredible talents. She helped organize the SPARC awards last year as well, and her ideas and enthusiasm help make the event great.

·          Yvonne Lopez-Morton works closely with the SPARC committee as the SPARC Judging Chair. She builds relationships with PR organizations nationally to set up judging and reciprocal judging for all of our award entries.

·          Christianne Sharman, our Events Chair, is also wrapping up her term on the board. Over the years, she’s contributed tremendous time and energy – everything from balancing the books (in her role as Treasurer) to planning the annual workshop and summer social.

·          Jeff Oswalt is the Web Site Chair and works with the board, membership and other local organizations to post information on the SPRC site. In past years, Jeff has played a key role in planning and overseeing the SPARC awards and in his free time jumps in on designing SPRC collateral pieces and presentations.

Thank you for your time, dedication and commitment to the membership!  You’ve all made an incredible difference. A special thank you to all of those board members who are close to completing their three, four and five year terms!
