Three Local Students Receive MarCom Internships
SPOKANE, Wash. – Three local university students are winners of this year’s Spokane Regional MarCom Association’s internship awards, the association announced today.
Jennifer Norwood, a junior majoring in Communications at Whitworth University; Jeremy Rainwater, a junior majoring in Public Relations at Washington State University; and Meara Hall, a junior majoring in Communications at Whitworth University, were this year’s internship award winners.
“These three outstanding students will spend 10 weeks during the summer working with local organizations gaining valuable work experience,” said MarCom President, Dave Sonntag. “It’s the type of real-world experience you simply can’t get in a classroom,” he said.
The interns were chosen by a panel of local marketing communications and public relations professionals who evaluated applicants based on a number of application requirements, including portfolio examples, news-release writing skills, and interview performance.
The three winners will be paired with MarCom association communications professionals who are employed at local businesses and organizations. Those three host organizations, the Northwest Museum of Art and Culture, Washington State University – Spokane and Greater Spokane Incorporated, were chosen from a field of 12 local organizations through a competitive application and ranking process conducted earlier this year by the MarCom panel.
“By pairing these outstanding students with high-quality host organizations and senior communications practitioners,” Sonntag said, “we’re confident that we’ll provide a valuable work experience for the students. In return, these young professionals will provide an infusion of ideas, energy and tactical skills to the organizations and to the community,” he said.
In addition to their internship positions, the three winners will each receive a $1,500 stipend. Through its annual “Spark Awards” competition, and other fund-raising activities, MarCom finances the annual program, which is open to area undergraduate college students majoring in marketing communications, public relations or related fields.
“Providing these annual internships is a great way for our association and our members to give back to the community and to help develop the next generation of our area’s marketing communications professionals,” Sonntag said.
