Two Local University Students Receive MarCom Internships

SPOKANE, Wash. – Two local university students are winners of this year’s Spokane Regional MarCom Association’s internship awards, the association announced today.

Kelly MacDonald, a senior majoring in Communications/Business at Whitworth University; and Tyler Tullis, a junior majoring in Public Relations/Advertising at Gonzaga University; were selected from a competitive field of 17 applicants as this year’s internship award winners.

The interns were chosen by a panel of local marketing communications and public relations professionals who evaluated applicants based on a number of application requirements, including portfolio examples, news-release writing skills, and interview performance.

"I commend the work of John Carter and his committee in tackling the difficult task of selecting the two scholarship finalists. They took their responsibilities seriously and the results are outstanding both for the host firms and for the interns themselves," said MarCom President, Jeff Thomas.

The two winners will be paired with MarCom association communications professionals who are employed at local businesses and organizations. The two host organizations, the YMCA of the Inland Northwest and Community Frameworks, were chosen through a competitive application and ranking process conducted earlier this year by the MarCom panel.

“The YMCA of the Inland Northwest is delighted to have been selected as a match for one of the top intern candidates by Spokane MarCom," says Mary Berry, Director of Communications for the YMCA. "I believe this opportunity will be an exceptional one for both the YMCA and Tyler. We look forward to the collaboration!”

“Interns provide creativity and skills that are invaluable to non-profits like Community Frameworks," says Ann Price, Resource Development Manager for the affordable housing organization. "MarCom’s support of Kelly as a paid intern will help us move forward two important but long-delayed projects intended to raise awareness about affordable housing and the people and communities we serve."

In addition to their 10-week internship positions, the two winners will each receive a $2,500 stipend. Through its annual “Spark Awards” competition, and other fund-raising activities, MarCom finances the annual program, which is open to area undergraduate college students majoring in marketing communications, public relations or related fields.

"This year we had an increase in the number of students applying for the MarCom scholarships as well as an increase in the number of host firm applicants,” Thomas said.  “The increased stipend to $2,500 is an affirmation of our faith in the future of today's rising marketing, communications and public relations graduates."

The Spark Awards are not only the main source of funding for the MarCom internship program, but also a night to recognize marketing and communications excellence.  This year’s Spark Awards will take place April 23, 6-9 pm, at The Lincoln Center.  Join Spokane’s finest marketing and communications professionals as they come together to honor the process and results of well-designed communications and marketing efforts.
