Shannon Iaci

2004 MarCom intern at Washington State University Spokane

I really enjoyed working at WSU Spokane. It was incredibly writing-intensive, which is not my specific interest in public relations. I am more interested in the event planning and corporate work side of PR, but this internship really honed my writing skills and opened my eyes to a side of PR I never thought I would like. I realized that all PR is writing-intensive, and now that I have experience in it, I love it and want to pursue it more. It turned out to be a great match for me.

I loved working on Taste Washington Auction, a wine and food pairing event with Washington Wineries at the Davenport Hotel. I was able to see all of the details that went into planning the event, work the event, and be part of the evaluation. It was an amazing experience to be part of such a large and successful event. I performed a variety of tasks ranging from picking up auction donations to designing the auction brochure to closing the auction tables. I really enjoyed getting hands on experience working in event planning, which is something that I am very interested in pursuing.

Barb (Chamberlain) was an incredible supervisor. She was a wonderful mentor to me and I believe that we have established a relationship that will last beyond the end of my internship.  Barb provided me with work direction, but allowed me to be creative. She was great at giving me constructive criticism on my work and she assisted in helping me develop even stronger writing skills.

The MarCom internship program was very valuable to me.  It gave me the opportunity to take what I had learned in the classroom and apply it to the real world of PR. I was able to gain solid writing skills and experience working in public relations. The internship also gave me the chance to create relationships in the community and interact with a variety of PR professionals. I would do this program again in a second. I leave this internship feeling as if I have a strong foundation in the basic principles of PR. I am ready to experience more in the wonderful world of PR.
