Ivy Plewman

Ivy Plewman, Western Washington University ‘04, was an MarCom summer intern in the Publications & Media Relations Office at Whitworth College in 2003

Upon learning that I needed to complete an internship as part of my public relations major at WWU, I had the attitude that the internship would be a pain to get, probably disappointing, and a waste of time. I was thrilled to find that I couldn’t have been more wrong.

When I found out that I had received an MarCom internship at Whitworth College, I was excited because I would be receiving a stipend (which, I understand, is very rare), and I knew that Whitworth has a wonderful academic reputation

Julie Riddle, the public information specialist at Whitworth, was very supportive and helpful. She was able to help me with the style and grammar errors I made in my writing, to give me new experiences and drop everything she was doing to help me when I needed it. She was very easy to get along with and I felt comfortable around her to express any feelings of dissatisfaction I had.

Now that it’s over, I can’t imagine a college student heading toward graduation without having some real-world experience. I have a year of school left, so I know what I need to work on before graduation.

I was very impressed with the MarCom's internship process. The application was simple and thorough, the telephone interview was well-structured and helpful, the 10-week internship seems to be a perfect amount of time to get a strong understanding of PR, and I feel like I’m much more prepared for graduation. My internship was valuable, educational, comfortable and boosted my self-esteem in the realm of PR.
