Barb Chamberlain, Director of Communications and Public Affairs - Host for 2004 MarCom intern Shannon Iaci

"We had a lot of writing to be done, and she did very well at that. She was interested in having an all-around internship, and as we are a very busy office that handles all types of communications work from media to community relations to marketing to publications and the Web, she got to see everything. She was very willing to pitch in, which is vital because the staff is so small.

"The MarCom internship is invaluable. We got a lot of work done that simply would not have happened without ’s abilities. It’s also energizing and valuable to stop and think about why we do what we do, which is necessary in order to explain it to someone who’s new to the organization and just entering the PR field. We too often don’t make time for self-reflection beyond a quick post-event evaluation, so having an intern in the office forces us to do something we should be doing anyway for best practices.

"I’ve had the privilege of hosting three MarCom interns now. Each one has contributed in different ways—all have been great. The work MarCom does to screen and match the interns saves me a great deal of time and provides me with top-notch talent. If I had to do all that screening on top of the actual internship supervision, I wouldn’t be able to have interns."
